Terms and phrases which may be unfamiliar in the 21st century:

• Cesesh - Secessionist; Southerner, specifically a Confederate sympathizer. 'a Cesesh Lady gave me a Quart of Flower of Corne' (1864: July 17, page 93)
• Jonnies, Jons - 'Johnny Reb'; Confederate Soldier. 'Saw the jonnies quite plane.' (1865: January 13, page 19)
• Pioneers - Engineers. 'the Pioneers are Still Busy puting up Buildings'. (1865: January 2, page 13).
• Posiss - Position. 'Still ocupy our Old Posiss' (August 25, 1864; page 40), 'Very good Posiss for a fight' (1864: August 18, page 35).
• Take the Cars - to Catch a Train. 'Took the Cares a bout Eight OC P.M.' (1864: July 8, page 88)
